![]() ![]() I know a lot of people are bigs fans of the Canon 50mm 1.4 because of it’s low price point compared to the Canon 50mm 1.2 but my recommendation would be to skip the Canon 50mm 1.4 and go straight for the Sigma 30mm 1.4 (if you have a cropped sensor body). ![]() It overall just doesn’t make me a happy photographer. I don’t trust it to produce sharp images, the auto-focus is incredibly slow and is constantly searching. It’s currently collecting dust in my storage closet. I purchased the Canon 50mm 1.4 and have never liked it enough to even take it out on my shoots. The focus ring is somewhat stiff so when you’re racking focus it produces a smooth result. Really nice lens for shooting video if this is something you’re interested in. Well built, durable lens without being too heavy The autofocus is fast and accurate (much faster than the Canon 50mm 1.4) Incredibly sharp, crisp images when shooting at f/2 and above and is sharp enough for me to be very pleased when shooting wide open I use it all day long thoughout a wedding. So it’s the perfect focal length for portraits, getting ready photos, low light reception shots and ceremony shots. On a cropped sensor this lens becomes an effective 50mm lens, due to the 1.6x crop factor. My primary body is a 5D Mark II but I am a two body shooter so I probably end up using them about the same amount. I use the lens on my “backup body”, the Canon 7D. The Sigma 30mm 1.4 is made for APS-C (1.6 crop) bodies the t2i, 50D, 60D, 7D, etc. But, after one session shooting with this lens I basically begged him to sell it to me. I was initially very hesitant to even try it out because I didn’t want to shatter my reality that everything Canon makes is far superior to all other brands. Then one special day a certain wise man, Chris, encouraged me to try out his Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens. Self admittedly, I was a “fangirl” for Canon and strictly used Canon gear for about 5 years of my photography career. For Photographers: Why I Love My Sigma 30mm 1.4
